What is GOTS?

Gots (Global Organic Textile Standard), is the label that has sought to harmonize the certification practices oforganic textilesin the world.  It is a recognized brand in the treatment of organic textiles based onorganic fibers. Created on the initiative of historical actors, the repository at a high level of obligation. Gots sets the criteriaenvironmentalthroughout the supply chain of organic textile products, while requiring compliance with the criteriasocial

When can one be Gots certified?

Gots certifies organic textile products. The label guaranteesthe biological origin of the fibersin all stages of textile production and processing in accordance with environmental rules.  Textiles containing a minimum of 70% organic fibers can then be GOTS certified.

What is organic production?

Organic production is based on a cropping system that supports and regenerates soil fertility without the use of toxic products.

What is Organic Cotton?

This organic cotton comes from fair trade. Cotton can be called organic or organic if it has been grown on ahealthy earthfor at least three years (a land without chemical pesticides).

The cultivation of organic cotton takes into account thenatural resources. It does not admit chemical fertilizers, pesticides or GMOs.

Organic cotton is fertilized with organic fertilizers. Soils renew themselves more easily and animal species are not threatened.

The first certified organic cotton hit the market in the early 1990s, five years later Baobabhatched.

Iuse of Bt cotton (genetically modified) have had a destructive impact on production lands such as India, Asia and especially Africa;

            “A recent scientific study carried out by Navdanya compared the soil of fields where Bt cotton was planted for 3 years with that of adjacent fields. Result: asevere soil degradation.

This is the first study to examine the long-term impact of Bt cotton on soil organisms.

In 3 years, Bt cotton has significantly reduced the population of soil microorganisms. At this rate, a decade of growing GMO Bt cotton could result in the total destruction of soil organisms, leaving the land dead, unable to produce food. »

     Burkina Faso, the leading cotton producer in Africa but also one of the poorest countries in the world, is is seen to pay the price… Indeed, the use of Bt cottons has left producers with a bitter taste.

The American agrifood giant Monsanto wanted to make Burkina Faso an African model in the production of genetically modified organisms, promising more yield and less work in the fields… in short, an improvement in life, progress.

Balance sheet, seven years later Burkina Faso has lost in addition to mother nature, a lot of money; the quality of the cotton is no longer up to par (due to the considerably reduced fiber length of the cotton), leading to a drop in the price on the international market. -136bad5cf58d_

              “ (…) soil degradation and deforestation, collapse of the social fabric, poisoning by pesticides, instability of the price of cotton on the world market, competition between cotton and food crops from the point of view of space occupancy and labor requirements.Which finally leads to food insufficiency ".

The earth is directly affected, and its inhabitants suffer the consequences;

           The oil extracted from cotton contains modified organisms in Burkina Faso. However, we consume the oil in very large quantities and it is also used for human food ”, explains the geneticist Jean Didier De Zongo.
